In late July, Smith and Jeff Forster, Vice President of Detroit Public Television, traveled to Nijmegen, the Netherlands. Here, with the assistance of Rick Adams, they interviewed Andre Stukens, the Executive Director of the European Foundation Joris Ivens. Stufkens, having first met Ivens in the 1970s, has published widely on Ivens, including two edited volumes: Passages: Joris Ivens en de kunst van deze eeuw (1999) and Cinema Without Borders (2002). Stufkens also assisted Dr. Smith in examining relevant materials in the Municipal Archives in Nijmegen. This included photographs of the film crew at work on the Parkinson farm, a brief diary kept by Ivens during the shooting, and a copy of the film script. He also showed Dr. Smith some of Ivens’ earliest home movies and Philipps Radio. Stufkens’ perceptive insights on Ivens and the Parkinsons are included in Power for the Parkinsons, with some additional excerpts on this web site. Stufkens also prepared an original essay on Ivens for this web site. (For more information on Joris Ivens, be sure to consult the excellent web site of the European Foundation Joris Ivens at info@ivens.nl).
